Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as just a young girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
